A speech I gave at the UST CRS Freshmen's Orientation... A question I pose to the freshmen of the Department of Physical Therapy, College of Rehabilitation Sciences of the esteemed University of Santo Tomas… Why on earth did you take this course? Why did you sign up for this? Did your mom or dad tell you this is an easy way out of Manila so that when you graduate you can pursue a career abroad? Did a relative tell you it’s highly in demand abroad? Well, think again. Why are you in this course? Possibly, this poignant video can help you think it through.

Perhaps, this would be a better question to pose for you? Do you have the desire to help people like Janne Kouri walk again? If you do, you can be in the right program. Physical therapy maybe, is one the most misunderstood among the programs offered in any university. Or should I say, at least here in the Philippines? I had the chance to interview incoming freshmen to this esteemed University way back then. Most of them would barely say the correct impression about the program. Much to my dismay, only a few would have the slightest idea. With big words taken from definitions found on Google. Memorized word per word. And as I’d listen through, I would have a twitch or two on my face as students try to define what PT is. So what is Physical Therapy?

To appreciate physical therapy more, do your research, and maybe volunteer. See if you have the passion for this. Try to expose yourself to such environment as early as possible. It is only then you'd find it fulfilling. While you are at it - Laugh hard. Work harder. Pray hardest.
