Escape: A Trip To The Block Island
Our good friends Christine and Jasper invited us to try The Block Island, a part of Rhode Island that hosts two historic lighthouses, one in the north and the other in the southeast. We had to take a 55 minute ferry ride from Point Judith in Narragansett Bay. Alternative ferry services are available from New London, CT, Newport, RI or Montauk, NY. We had the choice of bringing the cars with us but we thought it would cost us a lot. We ended up, however, renting two cars once we were on the island, not knowing that we needed them to go around to see both lighthouses. Bikes and mopeds were also available. But, with kids in tow, renting the car was the safer choice. Going to Block Island in April was not ideal since almost all shops were closed. Even museums and other specialty restaurants were not available. We went to the only restaurant open at that time, Mohegan Cafe and Brewery. We had the largest serving of fish and chips, good enough for three people to share. They say that the best time to visit is around the autumnal equinox, when the surge of visitors have died down and it is more considerably quiet around the island. I'd say our timing wasn't perfect but we almost had the island to ourselves. I drove to the lighthouses with my rented Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible with zest. My camera was on fire as soon as we got there. Please check out the images below. We definitely have to go back during its peak season and see how this little island become alive with throngs of vacationers.
